"Lost in D minor" is a visual exploration of the power of Japanese poetry to evoke deep emotions and connect us to our shared humanity. Each of the 31-letter poems, known as "waka," are rich in meaning and often layered with multiple interpretations. My inspiration for this artwork came from a poem by Murasaki Shikibu, a renowned Japanese poet who lived over a millennium ago.
めぐり逢ひて 見しやそれともわかぬ間に 雲隠れにし夜半の月かな 紫式部
The poem, "Meguri aite mishi ya sore tomo wakanu ma ni kumogakure ni shi yowa no tsuki kana," speaks to the fleeting nature of human connections. It describes the sudden departure of an old friend, leaving a sense of loss and longing in their wake, like the moon that disappears behind the clouds just as we're about to bask in its radiance.
In "Lost in D minor," I use a mix of bold brushstrokes and delicate washes to create an atmospheric and contemplative mood. The composition is minimalistic, allowing the viewer to focus on the evocative power of the poem and the emotional resonance it inspires. Through this artwork, I hope to celebrate the timeless beauty of Japanese poetry and inspire viewers to reflect on the fragility and preciousness of human relationships.
