Seven Sisters - เจ็ดสาวพี่น้อง explores communal eating in Thailand as a sacred ritual,
weaving food, love, and culture into a vibrant tapestry. At its heart, the work celebrates
sisterhood and the meals shared between my sisters and me in our family
home—formative moments that shaped who we are today. Each bite as a ceremonial
act, honours not just the bold flavours of our heritage but the deep bonds that connect
us to one another, our ancestry, and the traditional love language of shared meals.
The piece captures a moment of togetherness with my sisters in our hometown,
gathered around our mother’s home-cooked dishes that defined our childhood. Seated
on the ground, we share food by hand—a practice steeped with love, gratitude, and
intimacy, grounding us physically and spiritually to the earth. These shared meals
nourished our bodies, minds and spirits, serving as vessels for connection that
strengthened our bonds to family, culture, and home.
Each of the seven sisters, like a distinct ingredient, brings our own experiences,
struggles, triumphs, and dreams to the table (or mat), creating an exchange as complex
and layered as the food before us. These gatherings acted as a sanctuary to confide,
laugh, cry, argue, and bare our souls.
Now scattered across the world, with oceans between us, we each forge our own path
and write our own unique stories. Yet, when we come together—gathering around the
dishes of our childhood—we unlock a portal to cherished moments of communion in our motherland, savouring the warmth of closeness through storytelling, sharing food and laughter, all nurtured by the familiar flavors of our youth.
